Earbud controls
Which taps score
On most earbuds and every wired remote, one press is a MAKE and two presses is a MISS. Some brands ship different gestures — pick yours below and the app will show your rule everywhere. The on-screen MAKE and MISS buttons always work, whatever your buds do.
Find your MISS press
Ten seconds with your buds in. We'll tell you whether two presses reaches the app on your gear — and what to change if it doesn't. Nothing about scoring changes.
Earbud link: tap Start check to enable
Doesn't fit your buds? Pick a different MISS press
Optional. Only change this if your gear has a dedicated second button — most players should leave it on the standard rule. Saved on this device only.
Your MISS right now: 2 presses

Your rule
- 1 pressMAKE
- 2 pressesMISS
Single press is play/pause, double press is next track on most buds and on wired inline remotes.
Full reference
AirPods 3 / Pro / Pro 2 / Max
ConfirmedMAKE — 1 press on the stem or crown
MISS — 2 presses
Fixed by Apple — no setup needed. Press-and-hold stays on noise control.
AirPods (2nd gen)
SetupMAKE — Double-tap, if it's set to Play/Pause
MISS — Not available by default
Out of the box the stem double-tap is usually Siri. In iPhone Settings → Bluetooth → AirPods, set one side to Play/Pause. Use the on-screen MISS button.
Not sure? Run the 10-second check →Beats Fit Pro / Studio Buds
ConfirmedMAKE — 1 press
MISS — 2 presses
Same scheme as AirPods Pro. Press-and-hold is noise control.
Pixel Buds A / Pro
ConfirmedMAKE — 1 tap
MISS — 2 taps
Default on Pixel Buds. Pro models let you remap gestures — keep tap on playback.
Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 / 2 Pro / FE
ConfirmedMAKE — 1 tap
MISS — 2 taps
Same as everyone else: Samsung ships single tap as play/pause and double tap as next track. Triple tap is previous track — the app ignores it. Touch-and-hold is noise control or Bixby, whichever you assigned in Galaxy Wearable.
Sony WF-1000XM4 / XM5
VariesMAKE — 1 tap on the right bud
MISS — 2 taps on the right bud
By default only the right earbud controls playback; the left one is noise-cancelling and ambient sound. If your tap zones were reassigned, open Sony Sound Connect (formerly Headphones Connect) and set one side back to Playback control.
Not sure? Run the 10-second check →Bose QuietComfort Earbuds / Ultra
ConfirmedMAKE — 1 tap
MISS — 2 taps
Default. The tap-and-hold shortcut is separate and doesn't interfere.
Jabra Elite
VariesMAKE — 1 tap
MISS — 2 taps
Common default, but it differs by model and Jabra Sound+ lets you reassign double-tap to the assistant. If MISS never fires, set double-tap back to Next track.
Not sure? Run the 10-second check →Anker Soundcore Liberty / Life
VariesMAKE — Usually 2 taps on the right bud
MISS — Usually 2 taps on the left bud
Every model ships differently and every gesture is remappable. Open the Soundcore app and assign play/pause and next track to two gestures you like.
Not sure? Run the 10-second check →JBL Tune / Live / Tour
VariesMAKE — 1 tap
MISS — 2 taps
Budget models sometimes only have play/pause. Check My JBL Headphones if MISS never fires.
Not sure? Run the 10-second check →TOZO and other generic buds
VariesMAKE — 1 tap
MISS — 2 taps on one specific bud
Cheap buds usually split next/previous across left and right, so MISS may only work from one earbud. Wear both.
Not sure? Run the 10-second check →Wired headset, 1-button remote
ConfirmedMAKE — 1 press
MISS — 2 quick presses
The most reliable setup there is — the inline remote standard is the same on iPhone and Android.
Wired headset, 3-button remote
ConfirmedMAKE — 1 press on the middle button
MISS — 2 quick presses on the middle button
The + and – buttons are volume only; they never reach the page.
Nothing registers?
- Open your earbuds' app (Sony Headphones Connect, Galaxy Wearable, Jabra Sound+, Soundcore, Pixel Buds) and set a tap gesture to Playback / Next track — not noise-cancelling and not the assistant.
- Close whatever else is playing. Your buds send the press to the app that owns audio, so Spotify or YouTube in the background can swallow it.
- Keep this page in front and the screen on during a run. On iPhone, backgrounding the browser cuts the connection — installing Shot:DNA to your home screen helps.
- Still nothing? Run the tap test, hit Copy, then tap to send us the log. Every report makes this list better for the next player with your buds.
Undo, Repeat and Stop stay on screen on purpose — a stray bud press should never erase a rep.
